Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that the city of Wauwatosa was originally inhabited by native tribes. The history of our city began with the occupancy of indigenous people in the area now known as Wauwatosa. Many of Wauwatosa’s roots are tied back to tribal communities, like the naming of the Menominee river and the city itself. The origin of Wauwatosa’s name comes from the blending of several native words, including honoring a tribal leader, Chief Wauwautosa and the many fireflies (“waawaatesi”) that grace the region.
